Tara tagged me way back at the end of May:
- Who’s your all-time favorite author, and why? Alice Hoffman. Jack Higgins.
- Who was your first favorite author, and why? I'm not entirely sure I knew books had authors. I did like Edith Nesbit, Noel Streatfeild, Elizabeth Enright along with Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames (Yes, I realize the last set are series and not authors) Do you still consider him or her among your favorites? Now this is a peculiar question. Do I reread them? Yes. Are they still my favorites? Well, my tastes have matured somewhat.
- Who’s the most recent addition to your list of favorite authors, and why? Jim Butcher and Deanna Raybourn.
- If someone asked you who your favorite authors were right now, which authors would first pop out of your mouth? See above and add Allison Weir, David Starkey.
- Are there any you’d add on a moment of further reflection? Undoubtedly.

Courthouse Skies. Smoky. California is on fire. It's a little scary when you can't go outside because of particulates. I've never even heard the term in connection to air. Air that I breathe.
I have never been so happy to see blue skies in my life. The smoky pic was last week, the other was this morning.
Sock I was knitting on during Jury Duty:
Sock (12 st Ribbed Lace from Sensational Knitted Socks) started after deciding above sock looked pathetic and frogged it. I am however, deeply in love with the Eye of Partridge heel flap.
Sock as of this morning, modeling gracefully against the basil and ......some other herb.
It's only now I realize how much that resembles the Horcrux Socks (you'll have to scroll down). Oh well. The other sock patterns in my queue need a solid color or the cables/lace/patterns won't show well.
I'd post a pic of Hez but either no batteries work in my house or I really did break my camera dropping it off the bookshelf. I wouldn't mind terribly breaking the camera, I hates it. Any suggestions for a moderately priced camera that takes decent pictures of socks and cats?
Nice work on the sock!

OMG! You're the only person I know who read Cherry Ames! I loved her. I didn't know books had authors back then either. Glad your skies are clearing up. Did you get a good case for jury duty?
Posted by: Sonya | July 01, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Yay - more author suggestions from Carrie! You've always got winners. We just got a Canon A590, which I am liking a lot. Turns out my camera skills didn't suck all that much, but my camera did. Good to know.

Trixie Belden and Cherry Ames - now *they* had exciting lives, didn't they??
Thanks for playing along with the one-word meme. My favorite response of yours: "upright"!

Another word to be banned from overuse? "Awesome."
It was fun to read your meme responses, and your knitting projects are awe-inspiring. :)

I want a Castle too ;-) Preferably in Europe!

Trixie Belden! \o/ I remember deciding I was "too old" for those books when all I wanted was for her to kiss Jim, and it never happened, haha. Also, I remember one about a little Incan-type statute that was haunted or something, that scared me. I loved those books.

*Legion* I love it.
Your pics of the smoke are the most descriptive of any I took. Sheesh, we actually breathed that air for a week? Ick.
Posted by: Jennifer | July 01, 2008 at 07:26 PM
Trixie Belden, yes! Almost as good as Nancy Drew. I have not done an eye of partridge heel but I will someday. My new camera is a Canon PowerShot A720 IS; I read about it on Claudia's blog, and when Consumer Reports rated it a best buy I ordered one from Amazon posthaste. It's around $200, perhaps less when on sale or heavily discounted.

It's not often you find someone afraid of legions in this day and age. ;)
I'm a big fan of Olympus. But really, the big things are that it takes good macro shots and has an optical (real) zoom of some sort. Sports mode is very nice, but I don't know that Hez is as active as C&M.

Defenestrate is fun to say. So is cephalopod. I think all that smoke is headed to Nevada. It will be my first fire season, though I've been near forest fires before.

I have a Canon...um...whatsitcalled...oh, a Powershot. It's tiny so it's highly transportable and takes very decent pictures of cats and yarn, and flowers and other things too. I love the "macro" setting. And I assure you, I ain't no photographer, so if I can do it, you can do it.
I like the new sock, pretty pattern.
Mind if I self-tag with that one-word-answer meme? It's fun to read things like that about bloggers.

Carrie- Is the castle in Europe-? Save me a room.
Canon Powershot- easy to use, great pics and not expensive.

I've been very happy with my cannon Powershot ELPH, it is what I use for my bloggy stuff. I've had it for about 4 years and it has been great (now that I have said that though...) Great socks, it is always a challenge to match the yarn to the pattern that most pleases the eye.

Lucky you --- jury duty here doesn't allow anything to be brought along. I could have done a lot, a LOT, of knitting that morning I was called in.

I'm glad to see you have blue skies again...we had some thunderstorms this weekend and we are pretty hazy already too...looks like fire season has begun. I'm liking the second sock version better than the first...pretty lace with that yarn! How is it that I have not heard of a single one of those authors? Really, I DO read!
Posted by: Rachel | July 02, 2008 at 05:25 PM
You soooo cheated on that one-word meme. But, you also made me laugh. Thanks for that.
I have a Minolta (now owned by Sony) but I'm planning on going with a Canon or Nikon when I upgrade. I've never heard a bad word about either. Canon particularly covers all price ranges nicely without skimping on quality.

Lovely socks :) Oooh - I saw David Starkey speak at work once. I'd quite like to read some of his books.

Defenestrate is an excellent word! I loved Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew when I was a kid. Hope the fires get put out soon. I've been hearing about them on the news here in Minneapolis.
Posted by: Stefanie | July 03, 2008 at 06:03 AM
the obligatory Jury Duty sock!
Yes, the skies have been scary, actually given that these fires all started in early to mid June, it's looking like it's going to be a scary summer. Let's keep fingers crossed it's not too too bad... otherwise, when one needs to defenestrate an annoying something, a window will have to be broken... (har har)
Posted by: Liz | July 03, 2008 at 09:22 AM
Heh, upright! Good one...
Eye. Of. Partridge? I really have to get more creative with my sock knitting. And a great meme, I may have to steal it.
Defenestrate. Comes from the french word for window... Just me being a nerd.
(Funny how when I looked in on your blog last night, it still showed the previous entry.)

Id say that's a great way to wile away the time at court. Well done! Loved your list too. Bran Muffins.....yum. I have a really good recipe in NJFV and in the Veggie....archives, do check it out when you can. G

Oooh, I love Alice Hoffman. But I get really wrapped up in her books so I have to be careful what I read from her, sometimes they break my heart.
Love the socks, so pretty!
Posted by: BigAlice | July 04, 2008 at 01:10 PM
I really need to read more by Alice Hoffman. I loved the one book I read by her and it made her an instant favorite of mine. I haven't read anything by Jack Higgins, but I have seen his name come up now and again. I love your answer for #29 of the one word answers. :-) I wish I had thought of it.
I sympathize with you about the fires and the air quality. It wasn't so long ago that I was facing that near where I live. :-(
